ALTER / ALTAR :: MEMORY/MIRROR/MONUMENT/MAP
A hybrid documentation workshop / ritual in making
[Sign up on the Bowery Poetry Website]
For this workshop we will shred, table, excise, burn, and deconstruct the boundaries of poetics, both considering and creating works that challenge the genre. Can a hybrid documentation — that which invites in / explores historical and quotidian context, ephemera, detritus, found language, list making, and letters — alongside and in conversation with poetics — be a powerful, political, act of radical self-and-community archive-building? Can it be an act of healing? I say, indeed it can. And oh if we don’t need it more than ever in these times.
We will consider and respond to work by creative practitioners who resist categorization that explores these interstices in different ways, and actively workshop our own short zine-style hybrid chapbooks.
For poets with little to no background or training in visual arts or contemporary/20th century art history, this workshop also begins to offer a small window into the vast resources of explorations with text coming from outside an academic / “writing” based relationship with the medium, rather, approaching text as one of many tools in an arsenal of exploration, documentation, and challenge.
The problem is not “whose work will we explore,” but indeed, how much will we have time for?
Inspiration for this workshop includes (and will touch on, if not dive into the work of):
Moyra Davey, Adrian Piper, Antonio Artaud, Glenn Ligon, Teresa Hak Kyung Cha, Walter Benjamin, Bhanu Kapil, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Michael Taussig, Brenda Coultas, Claudia Rankine, Philip Whalen, Anne Carson, Clarice Lispector, Anais Nin, Penny Arcade, Judy Chicago, Jess, Frida Kahlo, Susan Sontag, Lori Anderson Moseman, Ammiel Alcalay, Sun Ra, Martha Rosler, Tristan Tzara, Leslie Scalapino, Jenny Holzer, Djuna Barnes, Brenda Iijima, Diane DiPrima, John Cage, Brian Gyson, Charles Olson, Sappho, Mina Loy, Gabriel Pomerand, Andre Bradley, Chris Kraus, Maggie Nelson, Rilke, Hakim Bey/Robert Anton Wilson, Semina Magazine, editions of the Dead Language Press, Xexoxial Editions “Xerolage” series, and the book “Letters to Poets”…among others…
**I’m continuing to add / collect inspiration for this course. I’m currently looking at the below, in addition to what you see above. Any suggestions?
