Editor’s note: welcome to the 5th iteration of our new weekly series, the Readings Roundup…which you might notice is growing steadily! Sorry if I’m repeating myself to some of you but if this is your first time here it bears noting that it’s long been a pipedream of ours to revive the NYC Poetry Calendar (started in 1977 by Bob Holman), to provide for the community here a true and cohesive overview of the vibrant scene that seems to birth a new event every day.
How does a poet new to New York or just new to the readings landscape figure out where to go, what these different events and organizations represent and offer?
We have a habit of biting off more than we can chew, so even though we have an overwhelmingly robust spreadsheet we’re working on making into an interactive page on the site, in future, we decided not to wait. In the meanwhile, we’ll start small — featuring in particular long running events and venues, making sure always to keep a healthy balance between styles and associations. We are judgement free and love filled, we’re just excited people are writing, reading, and sharing this important form. Come out!

An Evening with The Believer @ Greenlight Bookstore
Monthly magazine The Believer, published by McSweeney’s, has become a staple of the literary world in the last ten years. Greenlight joins in celebrating that optimism and longevity, along with a decade of great writing, with an evening of readings and discussion featuring The Believer’s editors and contributing authors.

Saturn Series Poetry @ Revival Bar

Saturn Series Poetry is a writers’ open mic every Monday night. This is not a slam, it is simply great poetry, prose and sometimes a song or two in a great listening room. The styles are varied with poets, playwrights, screenwriters and novelists.

Nine Lives: The Moth supports Ed Gavagan and the Artisans of the Greenwich St Studio @ Housing Works
begins 7pm | $20 – $50 suggested donation. All proceeds go to rebuild TriBeCa artisans studios lost in a recent fire.
A few weeks ago, a 3-alarm fire destroyed the studios of a group of artisans in TriBeCa. Join with the Moth and spend an evening with ten New York storytellers all to benefit this community as they try to start again after the fire.

Taiye Selasi visits McNally Jackson with her debut novelGhana Must Go, the story of a Ghanian-Nigerian family which moves across continents and generations. Selasi will be joined in conversation by Sapphire, author of Push and The Kid.

Festival of Iraqi Culture Event: “We Are Iraqis: Aesthetics and Politics in a Time of War” @ Alwan for the Arts

The Book Reading of “We Are Iraqis” is an Alwan-sponsored and hosted event that is part of a multi-disciplinary Festival of Iraqi Culture. Curated by Alwan for the Arts and hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Book Launch: “The International Bank of Bob” @ THE POWERHOUSE ARENA

Bob Harris shares his story of making hundreds of microloans online, and then traveling to see the results first-hand.

2012 National Book Award winner for poetry, David Ferry will be joined by Morri Creech and Matthew Thorburn for an evening of readings hosted by Waywiser Press.

Pulitzer Prize–winner and “New Yorker” poetry editor Paul Muldoon reads from his new book, “The Word on the Street: Rock Lyrics,” released in February by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Introduced by Deborah Landau.

Award-winning storyteller and Huffington Post blogger Leslie Goshko hosts a curated evening of original poetic works. Join co-creators Kyle Erickson (“Enduro’s Lament”) and Steven Leyva (“Low Parish”) as they welcome fellow authors Sarah Bridgins, Andy Christie, and B.C. Edwards for an evening of original poetry that Time Out New York magazine named a “Critics’ Pick.”
